The Complete Coach
Hi and welcome. My name is Andrew Thompson and I am ‘‘The Complete Coach’’. I have spent the past 15 years training clients and helping them achieve their fitness goals in various avenues of fitness from fat loss, building muscle to improving overall fitness, strength and health. In this time I have come to realise that in order to be a good coach to someone, regardless of their specific goal, you must have a complete and deep understanding of all aspects of fitness. This means taking the term fitness and translating it into total bodily efficiency in all aspects of human movement. This seems complicated until you realise, that the strongman needs to be flexible and fit, and the marathon runner needs to be mobile and strong. “Fitness’’ here at the complete coach isn’t just a reference to your cardiac efficiency. It is a reference to your body’s ability to perform optimally, with a focus on your chosen goal.

My story, qualifications and training history.
I am 42 years old (at the time of writing), originally from Dublin I have been in Sydney 20 years currently living and working in Maroubra. I live with my wife Carrie, and our 3 kids, Cian, Conor and our little girl Frankie. I tell you this because they are sure to pop up in the background of pictures and videos from time to time!
I started martial arts at a young age and went on to receive black belt in Kenpo karate and kickboxing where I was also a coach for some years. I trained religiously at the gym as well as at the club. I was, I will admit, quite inexperienced at the gym until someone finally showed me what a squat was and why I should be doing them! Roll forward a few years (to 2005) and now in Sydney, I initially swapped martial arts for boxing (which was and still is a big passion of mine). I now train in Crossfit and do a general hybrid of strength and fitness for overall health and wellbeing. I met a mentor, Jim O’Donovan, at a Sydney gym who turned out to be a world class bodybuilding and powerlifting coach. I decided to turn my passion into my career and studied cert 3 and 4 in fitness. My mentor helped me along the way and there was no one better to learn the practical elements that helped apply the scientific principles behind human movement. Jim has 40 years of experience in this game and his current level of fitness, flexibility and strength (aged in his 60s!) are a testament to his knowledge.
So I studied on. I added qualifications as a powerlifting coach and as a boxing coach. I was very fortunate in that I have access to multiple time world powerlifting champions and professional boxers to help me to hone my skills and knowledge base in these disciplines.
I then found interest in the area of mobility and functional movement. I would work with physios to help their clients to return to normal movement after injury. Then went further to study preventative movements that can save so many people from having to require a physio in the first place. I completed the “Master Rehab Trainer’’ course which was a fantastic experience. The course was designed by physios to marry the 2 worlds of physiotherapy and fitness training that function so closely together.
I continued to study and read and search for courses that offered the most useful content and came across the “Master of Functional Training” course. This course had a huge scope covering the science behind functional movement and its relation to injury prevention and recovery. I qualified as a master functional trainer and continue to read and study and search for the next learning experience. I know enough about this industry to know that I will never know it all, but I will certainly try my best!
My training philosophy is quite simple. I believe that first i find out all about you, the more information the better. There is no one size fits all and we are all different. That does not mean however, that there are not tried and tested principles, it means that your story is unique, and should be treated as such. Then with a main focus on your ultimate goal (which I define as the strongest driving force that brought you to me) we begin to map out and apply a structured and programmed plan to help you to achieve that goal. We plan, which includes time-frames for certain milestones, we measure so we can constantly update our information and react accordingly, and we adapt to the obstacles and changes that we are all but guaranteed to encounter.
Feel free to look over some of my clients testimonials, they are from both past and present clients and might give you an overall feel before making a decision. Or if you would rather arrange a face to face no obligation chat, then follow the enquiry link and I will be in contact to arrange it.
Thanks and I hope to meet you soon.
Andrew
